Atopic dermatitis is one of the most common genetically inherited inflammatory skin conditions that dermatologists are commonly called upon to manage. It most often manifests in infancy or early childhood. Itch can often be a very distressing symptom that affects quality of life. Many patients improve with age but sometimes the condition will persist into adulthood.
Whilst atopic dermatitis is a genetic condition, occasionally, it may be associated with contact allergies (chemicals touching the skin causing further immune-based inflammation). Rarely, food allergies may be a trigger. Sometimes further investigations are appropriate which may include patch testing, skin prick tests or RAST tests.
