The medical term for hair loss is alopecia. Alopecia may be localized to a few patches or it may be diffuse, occuring throughout the scalp. There are multiple causes of alopecia. These may include genetic causes, extreme stress that affects the hair cycle, immune mediated effects, drug side effects or infections.
